Abstract

We carried out a study of the upper lip force measured in 90 girls, with the purpose of finding out the value of such a force at 5 to 12 years of age. The sample was divided into 45 girls with adequate labial closure and 45 with inadequate bilabial closure according to the types of dentition. For this study, we used a 500g Dentauruum ball dynamometer. Group A was measured only once, being the values of the upper lip force shown for the three types of dentition. The second group (group B) was prescribed myofunctional therapy for the upper lip after first measurement, but it was measured again after one year, always recording the highest value of the 3 measurements made to each girl. The value of upper lip force of group B increased in the three types of dentition thanks to the effectiveness of myofunctional therapy. It was also confirmed that the appliance designed was useful, easy-to-handle and accepted by children for upper lip force measurement.
