Abstract

In order to characterize the main risk factors associated with the periodontal disease, an analytical case control study was carried out in the municipality of Colón, province of Matanzas, during the academic courses 2000-2002, in a population of 2 995 children aged 9, 12 and 15. A randomized sample of approximately 50 % (P=0.50) was taken. They were divided into 60 cases and 60 controls. Those children carriers of the disease were considered as cases, and the sound as controls. It was determined that oral hygiene was nil in 100 %. Microbial infection was observed in a high percentage (46.70 %). Respiration by the mouth affected 28.30 % of the cases. The systemic diseases were found in 35 %, tooth- crowding in 26.70 and defecient.
