Abstract

A longitudinal and comparative study was carried out, information was obtained on the economic repercussion of the antibiotic and bacteriological prophylaxis of infected surgical wounds, which occurred in 100 patients operated on due to fractures of the maxillofacial complex in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the "Saturnino Lora" Clinical and Surgical Hospital. of Santiago de Cuba, in a period of 18 months (July 1988 to December 1989). It was found that the average cost per indication of antibiotics showed marked differences between the groups investigated, since 92.9% ($ 1 169 57) of the total cost invested, $ 1 259, 10 were used in the control group; while $ 89.61 corresponded to the experimental group, but for therapeutic purposes. A reduced bacterial spectrum was demonstrated in postoperative infections with predominance of gram-positive, but not significantly; the most commonly used antibiotics were penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, ceporan, and others; corresponding the highest costs to penicillin, ampicillin and kanamycin.
