Main Occlusal Schemes Used Between 2021 and 2025 for Implant-Supported Prostheses: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Introduction: The growing use of implant treatments requires the implementation of appropriate occlusal schemes to ensure the longevity of the implants.

Objective: To describe the occlusal schemes used in adult patients rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses during the 2021–2025 period.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The search was performed from May to August 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, WoS, and Embase with keywords in English. A total of 395 records were retrieved; these were subjected to the selection process and enabled the review to be conducted.

Results: Three articles were included based on the eligibility criteria. The sample sizes were less than 50 patients. In 66.6% of the studies, natural opposing teeth were used. Thirty-three point three percent of the studies used mutually protected occlusion and group function occlusion, while another 66.6% used bilaterally balanced occlusion. Overall, only 33.3% of the studies presented a low risk of bias.

Conclusions: There are very few studies published between 2021 and 2025 that report the occlusal schemes used in adult patients rehabilitated with implant-supported prostheses. The bilateral balanced occlusion scheme was used in the majority of the studies analyzed. Sample sizes ranged from 29 to 40 patients, and the schemes were primarily tested with natural opposing teeth.
