Abstract

Introduction: the use of medications in pediatric patients is common, and many of these drugs, when administered over extended periods, can adversely affect oral structures and, consequently, restorative materials. Objective: to evaluate the effect of three types of pediatric drugs on color stability using different nanohybrid composite resin discs using a digital colorimeter. Methods: this was a quantitative, experimental, longitudinal in vitro study. A total of 80 discs were fabricated using two nanohybrid composite resins: Forma (Ultradent) and Tetric N-Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent). Forty disks of each material were evaluated for color using a digital colorimeter and subsequently randomly subdivided into four subgroups (n = 10); each subgroup was submerged in Petri dishes containing 10 ml of the respective test substance for 2 minutes. Group 1 Control: Artificial saliva (Saliv®); Group 2 Antibiotic: Amoxicillin (Amoval®); Group 3 Analgesic: Ibuprofen (Buprex® Forte); and Group 4 Multivitamin with minerals: (Apetitol®). After immersion, the discs were stored in artificial saliva for 8 hours until the next exposure cycle, which lasted 2 minutes. These cycles were repeated daily for 8 and 15 days, at which points new color assessments were performed. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon statistical tests. Results: the antibiotic Amoval showed a statistically significant difference in color stability after 8 and 15 days of exposure to the Tetric N-Ceram nanohybrid resin, indicating lower color stability (p < 0.05). Conclusions: the drugs evaluated are capable of producing color changes in the resinous materials used. While pH is a relevant factor, it is not the sole determinant; exposure time also significantly influences the magnitude of the color change, suggesting a multifactorial effect on the pigmentation process.
