Relationship between Diabetes Mellitus type II and Apical Periodontitis
Keywords:

Introduction: the relationship between Diabetes Mellitus type II and Apical Periodontitis has not yet been fully clarified; understanding this relationship can contribute to more effective clinical management of the patient in endodontics. This work seeks to answer the following question: Is there a relationship between Diabetes Mellitus type II and Apical Periodontitis?
Objective: to identify by reviewing the literature if there is a relationship between Diabetes Mellitus type II and Apical Periodontitis.
Methods: in the month of June 2024, the Pubmed/Medline electronic database was used to carry out a literature search applying the formula ((Diabetes Mellitus, Type 2) OR (Diabetes Mellitus)) AND (Periapical Periodontitis) originated from keywords and Boolean operators. Only human studies, in English, published between January 2019 and May 2024 were included. Two reviewers independently conducted the search, a third reviewer acted as referee. The PRISMA recommendations were considered in the development of the review.
Results: a total of 16 articles were included, of which 13 report a relationship between Diabetes Mellitus type II and Apical Periodontitis, while in the remaining 3 no association was found between these two pathologies.
Conclusion: under the conditions of the present systematic review of the literature, it is concluded that there is a relationship between Diabetes Mellitus type II and Apical Periodontitis. Multidisciplinary management is important to promote glycemic control in diabetic patients to prevent complications in their oral health.
