Abstract

Advances in computer technology and the different medical images techniques such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and others, as well as its rapid introduction into social practice have created new possibilities in reconstructive surgery and replacement of tissues and organs. This article sets out very briefly the developments in the use of these techniques with some examples of their application in reconstructive surgery, in order to upgrade specialists about the potential of these technologies in this field. While the computer design allows modeling the different characteristics and properties of tissues, the data obtained by digital processing of medical images reveal, with high resolution, the shape and dimensions of different parts of the human body to repair or replace. The combined use of these technologies known as rapid prototyping technologies (RPT) has revolutionized reconstructive surgery of tissues and organs, allowing not only the manufacture of different types of custom implants but allowing action from training to planning the surgery itself.
