Abstract

Dental professionals will need a much greater understanding of systemic diseases and their treatments. They will need more detailed medical and medication histories of these patients, knowledge about behavior and risk factors. Dentists may well be the primary health professional who consults many patients and therefore, they should be prepared to make referrals when they observe oral signs and symptoms of medical problems. They may also be in the best position to combat destructive habits through counseling and risk reduction programs.
