Abstract

The estimation of dental age is a widely used method, not only in specialized medical and stomatological care, as a clinical indicator of growth and development, but in physical anthropology for the purpose of human identification. When the formation of all the teeth has been completed, with the exception of the third molars, the different stages of root calcification of the latter can be used as a model for the estimation of age in subadults and young adults. The present work establishes the growth pattern of the roots of the upper and lower third molars in a sample of 254 Cuban patients of both sexes aged between 15 and 24 years of age to whom these teeth have been extracted, as well as the levels of variability in the different ages and, after a correlation and linear regression analysis, the confidence intervals for the estimates, adjusted for practical purposes, to be applied as a method of work in the practice of identification forensic as well as clinical research in growth and development.
