Morbidity associated with retained or partially erupted third molars in the line of mandibular fractures
Keywords:
mandibular fractures, complications, dental eruption, third molar, dental extraction.Abstract
We studied 210 fractures of the mandibular angle associated with an incomplete eruption or impaction of the third molar in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the Teaching Clinical and Surgical Hospital "Saturnino Lora" of Santiago de Cuba between 1981 and 1991. It was found that there were no significant differences in the range of complications when the tooth was extracted or left in the fracture line, as well as when open and closed reduction was used. An important and significant finding was the combination of open reduction and interosseal wire fixation and the retention of the tooth at the fracture site, so it is suggested that whenever the open reduction is planned, the third molar will be removed.
