Abstract

A bibliographic review was made on the smoking role as risk factor of multiple
affections with impact on the subject's health. Authors reviewed original papers and
of reviews located by Pubmed, Google and international national recognized
journals corresponding to selected key words. Information search period was from
January to December, 2010. It was emphasized in a particular way the influence of
this practice on appearance of following oral pathologies: pre-malignant lesions,
oral cancer, nicotinic stomatitis as well as the acute and chronic inflammatory
periodontal diseases. The influence of this practice in the development and severity
of periodontal disease was expressed. Also, the authors explored in this review the
features related to the smoking quit, the immediate and at long term physical,
psychological, economic advantages representing this type of behavior, as well as
the processes and methods that at present times are applied to such quit. It was
evidenced that it is necessary the implementation of techniques contributing to
smoking quit and thus to contribute to recovery of periodontal health.
