Abstract

Oral health must be seen as an element of the quality of life, especially in the ever increasing older population. The use of dentures for long periods of time by aged patients, without these being regularly changed, may cause pain and instability during mastication. This together with other factors may lead to the onset of lesions in tissues that are in contact with the denture. This study was made to determine the prevalence of some oral pathologies and their relationship with denture. The sample was made up of sixty eight patients aged 60 years and over, who were denture wearers and presented with the lesions under study, mainly denture stomatitis that affected 24 patients accounting for 35,29% of cases. It was found mainly in patients who have worn denture for a long time and these dentures were unadjusted. Taking into account the observed results, we consider that the necessary measures must be taken for diagnosis and treatment of these pathologies as well as for control of causative factors.
