Abstract

Chronic immuno-inflammatory periodontal diseases are one of nowadays more prevalent diseases. Associated to above is the smoking as risk factor. A cross, descriptive and observational study was conducted in smokers young adults aged 15-29, seen in Stomatology Emergency ("Adrián Sansarico" Polyclinic in Artemisa municipality) from September 2005 to February 2006, to identify prevalence of periodontal disease. By age, periodontal status, cigarettes smoked a day subjects were grouped. A survey and a oral examination were performed in all those that approved to be part of sample, a Russell periodontal index revised by OMS was applied. In our sample there is a similar behavior in smokers and non-smokers records. Prevalence of periodontal disease is present in 100% of smokers examined contrary to non-smokers. In our study it was possible to determine that smoking intensity is raising insofar as age of examinees increases, as well as that smokers periodontal condition is deteriorates in correspondence with intensity of this practice. Periodontal condition is more compromised in smokers versus non-smokers.
