Abstract

Hairy leukoplakia (VL) is a buccal marker of HIV infection. LV is an asymptomatic lesion that occurs mainly on the lateral edges of the tongue. For aesthetic reasons, particularly when the lesions are very extensive, some patients request treatment. Podophyllin resin (RP) is a topical chemotherapeutic agent widely used by dermatologists to treat human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. We present the clinical case of a 32-year-old homosexual HIV + male, who was treated for presenting bilateral LV in the tongue. RP was applied at 25% in the lesions. After 2 weeks of treatment, a significant involution of the LV was observed. The patient reported minimal side effects that included a burning sensation and pain. No systemic side effects were reported. These preliminary findings suggest that 25% RP may be a relatively safe and cost-effective treatment for VL in seropositive patients.
