Abstract

A study is carried out on the risk factors that most affect the appearance of the dental caries disease, given the high prevalence that it presents, which affects 95 to 99% of the population and places it as the main cause of tooth loss. The analytical study of the case and control type was carried out in the municipality of Colón, Matanzas, during the academic years 2000-2002. The universe consisted of 2,995 children aged 9-12 and 15 years old, of whom a random sample of about 50% was taken (P = 0.50). In the selection, the group of patients carriers of the dental caries disease were considered as cases, and as controls the healthy children or those who did not present symptoms of the disease. The degree of infection by E. mutans (41%), the degree of resistance of the enamel to the acid dilution (24%), poor oral hygiene (80%) and ingestion of sugary foods (100%) were determined.
