Surgical infections in maxillofacial surgery: Our experience

Abstract

A statistical study was conducted among 1 026 patients that were operated on at the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" Provincial Hospital in 2001. Surgical infection was confirmed in 35 of them (3.41 %). The highest number of patients corresponded to those who had undergone ambulatory surgery (3.39 %). The most infective nosological entity was orthognathic surgery (22.22 %). No relation was found between the infected patients and the predisposing diseases.
