Assessment of the presence and state of eruption of the lower third molar in fractures of the mandibular angle
Abstract
A prospective study of 176 patients with jaw fracture was performed in the Maxillofacial Surgery Service of the "Saturnino Lora" Provincial Teaching Hospital of Santiago de Cuba, during the years 1990-1995, in order to analyze the possible interrelation between fractures of the angle and the presence and state of eruption of the lower third molar. It was found that the incidence of these fractures was of great significance when the lower non-erupted third molars were present, that there was a more marked predisposition to fracture of the angle when it occurred bilaterally, as well as that the lower third molar was not erupted weakened the angle of the jaw, both qualitatively and quantitatively; that is, a direct relationship was demonstrated between the amount of bone space occupied by the lower non-erupted third molar and the weakness of the bone area.Downloads
