Abstract

The effectiveness of diadynamic and galvanic currents in the treatment of joint and muscle pain in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction was evaluated. The present pain index (PID) was used to assess pain before and after treatment. The sample consisted of 30 patients, who presented joint pain, muscle pain or both. The patients were divided into 2 groups at random: 15 patients for each treatment. At the beginning 10 sessions were indicated with a daily application for each stream, later each specific case was evaluated and if required, extra sessions were applied, a maximum of 12 applications was established. Total pain relief was obtained in 24 patients (80% of the total treated) and the remaining 6 had a partial relief reaching a value of (1) for 20%. With diadynamic currents (CD), 14 patients were completely relieved (93.3%) and one patient was partially relieved (6.6%), who presented with a very intense pain that made it difficult to concentrate, that is, with an index of pain (4). With the galvanic current (CG) 10 patients were totally relieved for 66.6% and 5 were maintained with a pain value (1), of which 3 had come with a pain value (4) and 2 with a pain value ( 3). It is emphasized that physiotherapy is applicable in the first stage to eliminate or reduce pain and then it is necessary to follow the common treatment in the cases that are required, according to the causal factor of the dysfunction.
