Introduction: mandibular fractures are often treated in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Objective: to conduct a literature review on anatomical considerations, diagnosis, classification, treatment and complications of mandibular fractures.
Methods: a literature review was conducted July to August 2016. Impact journals Web of Sciences (35 magazines) and 3 books were evaluated. Databases of MEDLINE, PubMed and ScieELO consulted with the descriptors "mandibular fracture", "treatment", "epidemiology". Items were included in the English language, preferably the last 5 years. 120 articles were obtained. The study was limited to 51.
Analysis and integration of information: anatomic considerations of the mandibular region are a starting point on this issue. The diagnosis is based on examination, physical examination and diagnostic aids. The precise classification allows choosing the treatment modality to use and avoid complications.
Conclusions: review of the literature to specify that no anatomical for the high incidence of mandibular angle fractures reasons. The first goal of interrogation is to obtain an accurate patient history. The regional physical examination should be enhanced in an orderly and accurate. The panoramic radiograph is a good choice in the diagnosis of mandibular fractures. The first step in developing a treatment plan is to establish what type of injury the patient has been to provide an adequate solution using closed and open techniques and avoid further complications.
